Feb 06, 2020The first thing you have to note is our history is not as dandy as the rest like to paint it. Its filled with competition and wars. The 2nd thing is that people's culture can be exhibited in different forms, not just arch designs and statues. With that in mind you can see the Oromo cultures impact in the food we eat, in the names we use, in the things we use, in the places we go to etc. For example food -> genfo, chechebsa, etc are from the Oromo culture. Names -> Adugna (means world), Abdi (mostly used in Islamic names but means hope), Mersa (mostly used in Tigrigna names, means his advice) even Hawi, Naol, Firaol etc. Things-> such as Qebeto (derived from Qabatee), Jebena (derived from Ija-bena literally meaning eye opener) etc Places -> this is where it gets interesting. The two prime clans of the Oromo are Borena and Barentu. Since everybody knows where Borena is I won't bother with it. But Barentu is found in present day Eritrea (seriously), Raya...both of them (literally means soldier and it's a spitting reflection of the Barentu clan, in dress code, dances and words), there is Were-Ilu, Wello, Were-Jarso, Belesa etc. All in the northern part of Ethiopia, the ones you aptly mentioned as Amhara-Tigre. This doesn't happen unless a people's culture has been mixed in continously throughout a long period of time. While the current geographical markup of (just like the rest of Africa) Ethiopia was formed during the European colonization era, it has existed for 3000 years continously expanding and contracting in that time. When the Axumite empire fell the qesawust moved the arc to present day Zeway and when slaves were sold to the Arabs during the Zagwey dynasty, the temporary camp they were held at is at present day Gende-beret in western Shoa. When cattles and camels were exported they were brought from present day Borena by the people living there and through present day Afar and Somali to the port Zeila in present day Somalia. The 1st recorded mention of the Oromo culture is in the 12th century (for more read Balambaras Ejeta's book). And finally as a nation we are bound to each other and have been so for thousands of years. While politicians and elites will always distort history to reinforce their dumb points the actual truth is more diverse and complex. The current setup of geographical boundaries of countries is the creation of European colonizers. The truth of the matter is the Ethiopia as a concept and as a nation had existed in the hearts of the people in east Africa, not just in the current 80 ethnicities but rather in all. The current understanding of ethnicity as a nation (Biher) is not derived from history of our country but rather from the Stalinist version read and forcefully implemented by the confused and often times dumb revolutionaries of the 60s and 70s. If you have the will to do so, you can Google and read Stalin's book. You'll see a direct copy paste of his writings on our constitution. They implemented it without a single understanding of its ramifications, its perquisites or its dangerous pitfalls. Stalin's understanding of ethnicity as a nation (biher) didn't even benefit his own country, it no longer exists. P.S. Russia is not Stalin's country, it was actually the USSR that broke apart into 13/15 piece s(that are always on the tip of war) we presently know as Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Lithuania, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan etc. By: Anonymous a few seconds ago By: Anonymous a minute ago
