Before the 4th century AD, which means before they accepted Christianity they were pagans who believe in the moon and the sun. After that it was Christian ruled state. (history books 😊

At some point Christianity came.

Intially there were Ancient jews (specially around the royal house and the capital) and pagans(idolators) .......... At 34 AD christianity was introduced to the country by the Ethiopian Enuch (whose story was written in the Acts 8 in the bible) it is also believed St. Mathew the evangelist preached in the state before he was matyred near Hierapolis (ancient city of Greece) ......... Then Christianity become the Official state religion in 328 AD after the conversion of Emperor Ezana of Aksum by Saint Frumenitus (the first offical pope of Ethiopian Orthodox tewahedo church) making Ethiopia the second christian state in the world next to Armenia ....... Islam was introduced during the time of the 1st Hijra at 613 AD Making the 1st state ever to tolerate and accept Islam (even before the Arab world) and it is said that the Emperor of Aksum at that time gave the muslim immigrants a place to stay. and they built a mosque there and in honor of the emperor they named the mosque "Al-Nejashi mosque" (mosque of the king) and those immigrants were the close relatives of the Islamic prophet Mohammed and it is believed they have preached and converted some local people even before "The Hijra"(i.e meca to medina) (Even Some of it is written in one the Haddith I think it was in Ibn Ishaac(I am not sure though)) ......... And also some local religions also exist in Ethiopia from the time of Aksum til now Yet Ethiopia stayed a Christian state until the Reign of Derg i.e 1974 AD and introduction of secularism ........... Making Ethiopia the only African state which continued as a Christian state after the muslim expansion led by ottoman turkey Thus Ethiopia is one of the few African countries with pre colonialism Christianity and Pre jihadist Islam Thank you and I hope it was helpful ( # disclaimer I don't have much knowledge in the area it is better if u confirm few of the details)

They were believers of gods but i forgot the year they accepted christianity. even they accepted Muslims but at this time axum wasn't that strong
