Why do people who got married without knowing each other( Our grandparents most probably) marriage lasts for life or longer??

So their marriages lasted longer and because commitment was given value they would try to be ቻይ of each others weaknesses. In the current times people have opted to a more selfish meaning of the term "relationship".
