What are Rotract clubs? What do they do? What benefits do i get by joining one? How do I join? What is the best Rotract club in Addis?
Nov 09, 2020Rotaract is part of the world’s largest voluntary organization called Rotary International which have over 1.2+ million members worldwide. The Rotary has 3 structural components, 1. Rotary: Well experienced professionals and Business people that gather to serve the community, with the motto of “Service above Self” 2. Rotaract: It is the youth part of this organization. I will explain more about it in detail below as your question is focused on that. 3. Interact: It is for high school students, its goal is making the students active, engage in extracurricular activities, understand the Rotary structure and learn to work as a team in early stage of their life. So back to Rotaract usually Rotaractors start from age 18 and used to be until 30, but as of 2019 that above age limit has been withdrawn. In Rotaract members (Rotaractors)are expected to develop their professional skills while giving back to the community. They can develop their skills through different means, 1. There are different leadership positions so one can be elected and serve at a one position for 1yr. 2. You network with professionals from different backgrounds. In Ethiopia there are 16+ Rotaract clubs, each have members from different professions and this will help you broaden your network that might help you gain perspective from different sides. . 3. There are trainings organized by the clubs themselves. Well known Guest speakers will be invited and will share experience. 4. You will get the opportunity to be mentored by well-established professionals and Business People from different Rotary Clubs. Each clubs have different community service projects based on the 7 areas of focus of Rotary. 1. Basic Education & Literacy 2. Disease Prevention & Treatment 3. Water Sanitation & Hygiene 4. Community Economic Development 5. Maternal & Child Health 6. Peace Building and Conflict Prevention 7. Supporting Environment The club members are responsible to come up with the project by identifying the need of the community, come up with how the project should be funded, how the project will take place, how the promotion for the project be taken. So the will develop their skill and teamwork ability through the process. There are 13 Board of Director positions. And one person can only serve a position for only one year (July 1-June30). Every year in Dec-Feb elections will take place for the coming Rotary year. One can nominate him/herself for positions they think they could fit in. The 13 BOD positions are. 1. President 2. V. President 3. Secretary 4. Treasurer 5. Club Service Director 6. Community Service Director 7. Fundraising Director 8. Interact Director 9. International Service Director 10. Public Relation Director 11. Project officer 12. Professional Development Director 13. Sargent at arms 14. Green Rotaract Chair Representative These directorships have their own duties and responsibilities. The first 3 are the only ones which require at least 2 years of service to their clubs. And of course we have fun in doing so. There are programs organized around Holidays, there is food and music and we enjoy the ceremony together. But above all! The FRIENDSHIP which at times turns to being family. I have great friends, that I met while serving in Rotaract. These friends have been there for me and I've been there for them as well. I am forever grateful to find such friends. Clubs meet every other week usually on Sundays. To become a member of a Rotaract Club one must attend these meetings. Finally, I would like to say joining the Rotary family was the best decision I have ever made. I have learned a lot, made many friends and got opportunities. I have to say for every contribution I put to Rotaract I have received much more in return. I am forever in debited to Rotaract and Rotary Family.
