You can use potassium chloride as a substitute which is ordinary table salt but it's preferable if you can get the unprocessed or non-iodized one. KCI actually makes a faster burning smoke bomb because it has a low smoking point but you can control that by managing the ratio of sugar and baking soda to make the smoke last longer.
