The crushing of his heads shows the total destruction of his dominion by the Lord Christ. The nations, even those afar off, partake of this victory as food for the soul.” St. Cyril of Alexandria: “The ‘people of Ethiopia’ are the nations that once sat in darkness. God gave to them the fruits of His victory, the knowledge of salvation, and the joy of the Gospel.” St. Gregory of Nyssa: “The dragon’s many heads are the passions and sins that bind the soul. Through baptism and grace, Christ crushes them, granting freedom and spiritual life to mankind.” St. Basil the Great: “As God once parted the sea for Israel, He now parts the waters of death through baptism. The crushing of Leviathan foretells this rebirth through Christ.”
Oct 22, 2025📖 Context This Psalm was written by Asaph, who was struggling to understand why wicked people seem to prosper while righteous people suffer. In the earlier verses (Psalm 73:2–13), Asaph admits he almost lost faith when he saw how the ungodly lived comfortably and successfully. 💡 Meaning of Verse 14 > “For all day long I have been plagued and chastened every morning” Asaph is saying: He feels punished or afflicted constantly — his life seems full of trouble. “Chastened every morning” means that every new day brings fresh challenges, pain, or correction from God. He is expressing deep frustration and confusion: while he tries to live faithfully, life feels unfair and full of suffering. 🙏 Spiritual Lesson Sometimes believers face suffering despite being faithful — it can seem as if God favors the wicked. But later in the Psalm (verses 16–17), Asaph realizes that the success of the wicked is only temporary. When he enters God’s presence, he understands their ultimate end and regains peace. The verse teaches that faith isn’t about immediate reward — it’s about trusting God’s justice and timing even when life feels unfair.
