It is depressing. But it's kind of the reality of life, that's what makes the whole thing absurd. We all lose value when we don't bring something to the table. The worst part I think is that what worried Gregor the most was not that he became a vermin but that he can't get to the work that he hates every aspect of in time. That kind of showed if we stayed in the illusion people built for us long enough, we will believe that's all we are worth.
