Humans seem cowardly because we got to the top of the food chain unnaturally fast. For millions of years, our ancestors were middle-tier animals — hunting small prey, but also constantly avoiding bigger predators. Then, in just a blink of evolutionary time (tens of thousands of years), we jumped to the very top thanks to intelligence, language, and cooperation — not because we evolved claws, fangs, or sheer strength. Other apex predators — lions, sharks, eagles — took about 2 million years to slowly work their way up. That long climb gave them confidence, stability, and the instincts of a natural-born killer. We skipped that queue. So our bodies and instincts are still wired like prey animals, even though our minds control nuclear bombs. That’s why, deep down, we still get anxious, fearful, and overreact to threats. We’re apex predators with prey brains — powerful but insecure.
