Yes they were. Emperor Constantine assembled a meeting in 325 C.E. before that there were many forms and beliefs in Christianity most of which accept Jesus Christ as the Messiah sent to children of Israel and not as a deity. They gathered in a meeting and they selected those ideas that seems similar to Roman mythologies and Jewish folklore. They selected the ones that suited their interests and affirmed their power and greed all in the name of serving God. They burned the rest of the gospels and prosecuted those who follow other than their version of Christianity. How could men gather in a meeting and choose what is from God and what isn't? Who gave them the authority?
