Are ethio telecom and safaricom at war with each other? I've noticed some weird things between the two companies. For instance, ethio telecom is selling phones that only accept their sim cards, and if you insert a safaricom sim card or any other sim card, the phone locks and apparently cannot be unlocked, which limits customers' freedom. Similarly, Safaricom is selling phones that require their sim card to be in the first slot to function; otherwise, the phone locks and cannot be used. Also, I've noticed that on my phone that is bought from safaricom, calls from an ethio telecom number sometimes don't work, while calls from a safaricom number works. What do you guys think?
Apr 06, 2025It definitely looks like there's some corporate cold war going on between Ethio telecom and Safaricom. What you’re describing, SIM-locked phones, slot restrictions, and call inconsistencies, aren’t just coincidences. These tactics are classic market control strategies telecom companies use when they’re competing aggressively in a newly opened market. Ethio telecom is likely trying to defend its long-held monopoly, while Safaricom is pushing hard to gain loyal customers. Locking phones to specific SIMs is one way to “trap” users in their ecosystem, which unfortunately limits consumer freedom. And network compatibility issues could be technical, or intentional. So, are they at war? Not officially. But behind the scenes? Definitely feels like a turf battle
