Hi AAE family Are there any self-taught developers here with or without a computer science background who have successfully built a career using their skills? Could you share your experience, including how you entered the market and found your first job? What advice do you have for other self-taught developers trying to break into the industry? Also, could you provide insights into the developer job market in Ethiopia? Are companies there generally open to hiring self-taught developers? Thank you.
May 09, 2024Yes, I am a self-taught developer who successfully built a career using my skills. Initially, I worked on projects independently without any pay, partly to learn and partly because I believed these projects would solve real problems. One of these projects was an Android app, which I shared with several people and developer groups. Since the app was impressive for its time, it garnered a lot of admiration, significantly boosting my reputation. Whenever these people encountered someone needing an app, they referred them to me, which is how I broke into the market. My advice for other self-taught developers trying to enter the industry is to focus on building something fully functional that people can actually use. Many developers struggle with commitment and often jump from project to project without completing anything. Instead, aim to make one project as impressive as possible, and then share it with others. Doing this will help you develop the necessary skills to create a fully functional product while also giving you something concrete to showcase.Regarding the developer job market in Ethiopia, there are many developers, but few have the skills to build complete, end-to-end solutions. The most talented developers often work for foreign companies. When it comes to companies hiring self-taught developers, what truly matters is what you can demonstrate through your work. This may not hold true for government companies, but overall, if you can build functional products quickly and effectively, you'll have significant leverage in the job market.
