Rest:Â Avoid activities that cause pain, swelling, or discomfort.
Ice:Â Use an ice pack or ice slush bath for 15 to 20 minutes immediately and repeat every two to three hours while you're awake.
Compression:Â Use an elastic bandage to help stop swelling until it stops.
Elevation:Â Raise the swollen part of your body above the level of your heart several times a day.
Medication:Â Take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or naproxen, to ease the pain and reduce swelling.
Exercise: Move and use the muscles in the swollen part of your body, especially your legs, to help move fluid back toward your heart. You can also try gentle exercise, like walking, to improve your blood flow.
Support:Â Wear a walking boot or brace to provide ankle support.
