Let me put it as simply
First off, Humanity fell from innocence and lost his relationship with God because of the sins of Adam and Eve. Now everybody is sinful but God's standard to be in heaven with Him is complete (100%) perfection — that person must never sin his entire life. The Bible makes it clear that Adam lost his relationship and got expelled from Paradise because he sinned only once — "a simple sin" we might think. He just ate damn fruit. But doesn't everyon do worse sins that this? Everyone does. We constantly do what God tells us not to do — lie, steal, lust, etc. So God's standard to be with Him is not to sin ever.
But that's impossible, isn't it? There's hasn't actually been no one who hasn't sinned, right? Yep (Romans 3:23) So are we all going to end up in hell? Well, that's where God plays His part. Since we can't save ourselves, He brings salvation to us through his Son. And Since God is Just, no sinner is left unpunished or no sin is left unpaid. And that's what Jesus did — he took the punishment we deserve (death) and paid our sins by His blood.

Here's a simple analogy:
So let's say we're in a court and there's a Judge and a guy who stole a 10,000$ from a shop. The guy was previously a good person with no criminal records, and if the Judge was aware of that and said "since you're a good person, I'm gonna sentence you with nothing. You're free to leave." So does this make the Judge just or is the judge just? Heck no. The thief has to be judge according to the law with the right punishment, then we can say the Judge is just.
But what if the judge himself steps in and returns the money to the shop owner (ከኪሳራው ጋር — like 13,000$) himself? We can surely say the judge is just. And more over the Judge is LOVING towards that thief.
Now I think you get it.
Jesus' death on the cross is the point where God's justice and love meets.
So let me sum it up:
• God's standard to be in heaven is complete perfection (you have to be sinless your entire life)
• No person can reach that standard, and the wage for sin is separation from God (death) — see Romans 6:23
• God came down himself in human form and took the punishment humanity deserves, thus showing his Justice and Love. He took the sins and punishment of humanity.
• So those who willingly accept Jesus and believe in Him are justified (got perfected by His Blood). Now they meet God's standard of perfection and are able to get into heaven because of His free gift (Grace). And those who do not accept him are saying "I don't wanna be with", so they get what they want — separation from God (death).
