I wanna be a psychiatrist but my family don't respond positive for it I can't give my dream a deep six and also disappoint my family as well...so what shall I do?
Oct 04, 2020Ugh darling ...I also wanted to be a psychiatrist .. But here in Ethiopia..you only have 2 choices 1. To take the 4 year psychiatrist program in university (I don't even know why they have that since you won't be a doctor. You will be the Doctor's assistant ) 2. Learn medicine for 7 years and see where the path takes you...and you can actually specialize in it after that I gave up on mine because I didn't think I'd handle the pressure in uni for 7 years and the salary wasn't worth it. But most importantly , I really wanted to detach my self from the pain I was feeling and thought being a psychiatrist would help me... later realized the end goal i set won't (may not) solve the problem I have. So I think . 1st. know why you really want to be a psychiatrist. 2nd. as far as I know, the best path to be a psychiatrist is the 2nd choice I stated 3rd . any Ethiopian parent would be very happy to see you as a Med student (2nd choice) 4th. Learning Psychology and psychiatrist program in uni for 4 years isn't so appealing to me since u can easily take it in an extension class or study it by your self. 5th Above all, listen to your self ...I'd really suggest you talk with a real psychiatrist about this. You could tell him about your worries ..it'd also be so helpful since u want to pursue the same carrier as him. And would help you figure out why you really want to be a psychiatrist - which is the most important thing. 6th do 5th no matter what fr... I wish you all the best! Oh and it was hard for me to find a good psychiatrist in Ethiopia(for personal reasons) ..if you know a person, go for it. If not, I can say the Doctor I'm seeing now is very good ..I can give you his address. God bless you!
