Hello AAE family, I have one question. My PC is an HP Elitebook with a Core i5-6 processor. I am using the Ubuntu operating system (OS) and have two disks - an SSD and a 1TB HDD. The OS is installed on the SSD. When I try to unmount and mount the HDD, it makes a sound like "korrrr," and the number of bad sectors on the HDD is increasing each day. Please help me understand what this indicates and how I can fix it. Is replacing the HDD necessary?
Jul 28, 2023The sound you are hearing when unmounting and mounting your HDD could be an indication of a failing hard drive. The sound could be caused by the read/write head touching the platters or the spindle motor bearings failing. The number of bad sectors on your HDD increasing each day is also an indication that your HDD is failing. It is recommended that you back up your data immediately and replace the HDD as soon as possible. You can also try running a diagnostic test on your HDD to confirm if it is failing. If you are not sure how to do this, you can take your laptop to a professional technician who can help you with this process.
