A year has passed since the beginning our relationship. I can see that she loves me a lot and I do so. But lately, she has been saying things like, "I need a space. Don't call, text, or come to me." This is awful since I haven't been feeling well since she said it, and I've been down for days. Why do you girls claim that I need space?

Because it is vague...it is not a good phrase...on one hand it implies uncertainty ,not sure about the current feeling we have towards our partner ..on the other hand it is a cry for help,maybe she is struggling with something and she doesn't want to bother you with it ... So,talk to her calmly. But the latter is least likely,maybe she is no longer interested in you..or not sure about her feelings. With that being said i would really advice you to give her the space she needs,dont call ..dont text..dont go to her...do this in a calm and caring manner and one day she will come up and tell you her decision.
