Don't know why u referred to women specifically, but I think it actually depends on the personality. Don't know how gender affects this. Introvert persons usually prefer text since they have not developed the social skill to speak in sync with others in real-time, thus being able to express themselves better over text. It's just a more efficient way to communicate, u get to formulate ur ideas well, over text, before sending.
