We couldn't have started on 0 AD because we (Ethiopians) living in Africa would have no way of knowing a baby (Jesus) being born in the middle east and, start celebrating that year. And even if we knew we didn't accept Christianity until ezana, so there would be no reason ' for us to start celebrating new years on the same year Jesus was born.
