This one is for med students I'm joining medicine now and I need y'all to tell me the best studying mechanism that you wish you knew when u first join. And what techniques are effective for not forgetting ? Thank you !
Jan 10, 2022A second year med student here. So there is no one specific method that's bound to work for everyone and you have to try and figure out what works best for you. I'd suggest that you do that as fast as you can because you don't really have much time to figure things out and if you don't quick enough, you could end up with your grades declining beyond fixing. Here are the methods that I currently use and work well for me. They are not study methods per se, but they are a couple of things I wish I'd known before joining (as soon as I joined) med school. 1. Use spaced repetition. I won't go into the details and you can google it out but the one app that helps me the most while scheduling and executing my spaced repetition is called anki. You could also use quizlet. These apps help you make your own flashcards but you can also find pre-prepped flashcards and that helps much. 2. NEVER PROCRASTINATE. I don't suppose this needs much explaining but procrastination is the gateway to your downfall in med school. There's no I will do it later, or tomorrow, because guess what? You have more stuff coming your way that you should get done tomorrow. Don't let your work pile up or you'll get pretty screwed. 3. Always take breaks. One very important thing I wish I knew was that you should never bite off more than you can swallow. And specially in med school, with all the work you have to do, it's unsurprisingly easy to take more than what you can handle and burn yourself out. 4. Set realistic expectations. Now I don't know what kind of student you were in high-school, but med school is a whole new story. You will be competing with perhaps the best students in the country and if you constantly keep setting up your bar too high, you will end up disappointing yourself that's not good for your psyche in the long run. You can't beat everyone in med school and you won't ace every exam either. Focus on what you can and should do, and work on that. Everything else is out of your control and it is very important that you understand that. If you need further explaining and what-not, feel free to text me. Always pleasure helping a fellow med student.😁
